[FCI NOTE: Fasting Center International does not accept severe Bipolar clients, or any Bipolar taking Lithium. WebMD.com explains the difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II Disorder as follows:"Bipolar II Disorder (pronounced 'bipolar two') is a form of mental illness. Bipolar II is similar to Bipolar I Disorder, with moods cycling between high and low over time. However, in Bipolar II Disorder, the 'up' moods never reach full-on mania. The less-intense elevated moods in Bipolar II Disorder are called hypomanic episodes, or hypomania. A person affected by Bipolar II Disorder has had at least one hypomanic episode in life. Most people with Bipolar II Disorder also suffer from episodes of depression. This is where the term 'manic depression' comes from. In between episodes of hypomania and depression, many people with Bipolar II Disorder live normal lives.
"Virtually anyone can develop Bipolar II Disorder. About 2.5% of the U.S. population suffers from some form of Bipolar Disorder--almost six million people. Most people are in their teens or early 20s when symptoms of Bipolar Disorder first start. Nearly everyone with Bipolar II Disorder develops it before age 50. People with an immediate family member with Bipolar are at higher risk."
Two weeks prior to signing on for her 'Waivered' Juice Fasting Program, a Columbus, OH, social worker, 29, suffering Bipolar II Disorder wrote:
"I'm interested in fasting with Fasting Center International. I have Bipolar II Disorder, with virtually no hypomania or mania, but a history of depressive episodes. I currently take four different drugs: Lamictal, Buspar, Wellbutrin, and Lexapro. I am hoping to come off of all of these except the Lamictal (mood stabilizer) in three or four months. During my most recent depressive episode, I gained over 30 lbs. I'm interested in fasting not only for weight loss and detoxification, but also to deepen my spirituality. Is fasting under the supervision of Fasting Center International an option for me at all, either now or in the future (when I will most likely be on fewer medications)? Sincerely, Maria"
FCI allowed Maria to do a 'Waivered' Program, starting with our very shortest, 20-day Program and, if there were no contraindications, extending in 10-day increments. . .as long as she continued taking her prescribed medications, until she and whoever prescribed them jointly decided they could be lessened or stopped. One the first day of her fast, she shared her goals:
"As my 30th birthday approaches, I've begun to evaluate my life, and desire to make long-term changes that will enable me to maintain health and vitality for the rest of my life. I've struggled with depression for most of my adult life, and used food to numb myself, to the point that I now have a true food addiction, particularly to sugar and coffee. I chose to do this Program to free myself from food, sugar and coffee addictions, and lose the 50+ pounds I've slowly put on during the last 10 years. I want to experience more energy, and feel as free and connected to my body as I did in my late teens. I'm also hoping this fast will help clear up my rosacea, mild acne and cysts. Mostly, however, I want to figure out what life is like without thinking about food 24/7. . .in order to experience life richly, fully and spiritually."
After completing her 60-day Program (50 days of actual juice-fasting), Maria wrote FCI's Founder/Director, Dennis Paulson, the following:]
By Maria Aguilar, a university-degreed, licensed social worker and FCI client
"Hi, Dennis: I wanted to write you and let you know how much has changed for me while I've been fasting."When fellow fasters mentioned the heightened feelings of clarity and awareness, I thought I would feel like a Buddha by doing this fast. The clarity and awareness have come, but never in the way I expected. I've lost about 40 lbs. while fasting, which I expected to be super excited about. I'm delighted to say that, although I'm grateful to not be carrying around that extra toxic load, it was the least important of the many changes I've experienced!
"As an eating-disordered person, I feel like my relationship with food has begun a journey of healing. I feel at peace with food and nourishment, and now understand that what I thought my body needed in the past was far from the truth. I feel at peace with my body, and grateful for how much life it has enabled me to enjoy.
"While fasting, with the support and supervision of my unusually enlightened psychiatrist (as you know, I am bipolar II), I have been able to eliminate one of my four meds, and begin stepping down a second. For the first time in years, I'm hopeful that I have the power to heal my mind, as well as my body, and that my disorder can be managed without medication, in the long run.
"The revelations continue to roll in. Now that my mood is both stable and no longer blunted by some of the meds I was taking. I'm actually able to have a cognitive response of "Why am I feeling this?" when I experience an intense emotion, rather than not feeling them at all (on meds) or being completely overwhelmed by them (when my bipolar was untreated).
"In being able to step down some of these meds, I'm realizing exactly how much of my emotions were being blunted. I am re-experiencing a full range of emotions for the first time in years. I'm grateful to feel every single one, whether it's on the happy end or the sad. I can see the inseparability of body and mind more acutely.
"I feel more acceptance of myself, and am even grateful for the flaws that give me an opportunity to learn, change and grow. I feel a deep, warm, glowing gratefulness for my family and friends, and for the richness and joy they bring to my life. I plan to do a shorter fast while transitioning from Spring to Summer, and a longer one Summer to Fall.
"My advice to any fellow or future fasters is simple: Have faith. Everything uncomfortable will pass. You will feel the best you ever have. You will discover parts of yourself you didn't know were there. Know that you are in the experienced, compassionate hands of a true "master" of fasting.
"Thank you, Dennis, for your support, and for offering this opportunity to me and people all over the world. I'm amazed at how easy this has been. You are a hidden Bodhisattva. Many Blessings, Maria
"P.S. I'm delighted to share my experience on FCI's website, and truly hope it can be a story others with mental health disorders can relate to and possibly find the same relief from symptoms that fasting has brought me."
