[FCI NOTE: Depression is real--fleeting or chronic, mild or clinical. If you've never experienced it, consider yourself extremely fortunate. . .or simply wait. In the U.S., for example, it's now estimated that one-fourth of the population is suffering depression at any given time, to varying degrees. Among U.S. teenagers, who may look like they're cooler, fully two-thirds suffer suicidal ideation as teens. Notables from Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix to Sylvia Plath and Franz Kafka, all wrestled with depression. It spares precious few, over time, counting those at all levels of society and intelligence among its victims, from Isaac Newton and Carl Jung to Marilyn Monroe and Indira Ghandi.Churchill attributed his lifelong depression to parental neglect, as well as to genetic factors. In many cases, however, depression has no identifiable cause(s). External events may trigger it, such as a death or the loss of one's job, relationship, financial stability, or even one's crib. In rare instances, certain medications have depression as a side-effect. Likewise, even a flu or some other viral infection may lead to a short-lived depression. Should you think depression doesn't touch your family, set or subculture. . .look more deeply. Depression is estimated to cost the United States, alone, $53 billion every year, mainly through absenteeism among workers and reduced productivity.
A Winter/97 study presented at a Vienna conference now warns that depression will become a huge burden on the world unless better methods are now developed to treat it, adding that most psychiatrists agree that depression will be the leading cause of disability in the developing world (where few can afford psychotherapy or a daily Prozac fix) by 2020. Experts also contend that millions of people are walking around depressed without even knowing it, and their health practitioners and families are missing what could be a serious illness as well. They add, sadly, that most people still believe the symptoms of depression--which may include persistent sad or anxious moods, sleeping too much or too little, appetite changes and fatigue--are some sort of character defect (part of the reason why two-thirds of the 17 million people in the United States with clinical depression go undiagnosed).
To those actually caught in depression's jaws, however, it's classically described as a "black hole," from which one can see no way out. One who found himself suffering in this sad, black hole is Kevin Boon, 33, a Kitchener, Ontario, territory manager for a Canadian firm. Just as it takes great courage to find one's way out of chronic depression, know that it also takes great compassion and huge character to make such a metagesture as Kevin has here--sharing his own prolonged suffering, and how he finally resolved it, in the hope that his discovery will help ease the pain of others, worldwide. Here, then, is how Kevin freed himself. . .through doing FCI's patented, most popular Total Detoxification Program--60 days, in his case.]
"I was drawn to FCI International after a year of going through some setbacks which led me into a prolonged depression. These setbacks included the loss of a business, heavy financial challenges, and dealing with my own issues around worthiness, plus relationship struggles. For me, the result of these events was a total loss of self-confidence, which led me into what seemed like chronic depression. By December of 1997, I was frustrated and felt totally helpless. I was in a hole that I could see no way out of. Everything that could go wrong had indeed gone wrong. I was very bitter, experiencing huge emotional ups and downs. I felt out of control. I had no answers to my dilemma.
"I had been involved with my own personal-development education for the past five years. I'd read hundreds of books on success, including ones on goal-setting, affirmations, visualizations, spiritual development, and building self-esteem. I had attended seminars on personal growth, and I knew a lot about all these subjects. But, for some reason, I had not been able to apply the principles into my own life. When I approached FCI, I was looking for a solution to heal my depression. In the three months prior to my fast, my depression had become much worse, so I was now beginning to feel that it might be due to something physical, such as the heavy amounts of sweets and processed junk-food I would eat during the day. The possibility that my emotional setbacks might have something to do with my eating habits, was something I had not considered before that.
"I researched the FCI website in detail, and asked its Founder/Director many direct questions before I began my fast. What impressed me about Dennis was the promptness with which he responded to my emails, and the detail of the information he provided. My type of personality likes lots of information. Soon after starting our email communication, I knew, intuitively, that I had to do this fast. So, I chose to do a 60-day total detoxification fast (age +17, + 5 transitioning days on each end). It's been one of the most fascinating, personal-growth experiences of my life.
"What this program did for me, was help me to gain control over my depression, and actually find a level of inner peace and confidence which I had never felt before, in my life! Spiritually, I evolved to a new level. I was finally able to relax my mind, to a state where I could meditate everyday. I had never been able to meditate for more than a few minutes, before. I now find I have more patience, my emotional response to life is much more centered, and I feel a wonderful, loving connection to other people. I also found a new level of mental clarity, with regard to my life's purpose and my goals. In addition, my fast has taught me some important principles about discipline, which I am now incorporating at all levels in my life.
"What's interesting is that the actual juice-fast, itself, was not difficult. It was not difficult to go without solid food for 50 days. It was just something that I'd never even considered, let alone done before. Before the fast, I had many doubts. I couldn't see myself getting to day 10, let alone day 50. What made the difference was my personal motivation, coaching from Dennis, and the desire to see it through.
"If you are considering an extended juice-fast, then consider this. Before my fast, a close friend said to me: 'You actually are going to pay someone money, so that you could go without food for 60 days?!" They rolled their eyes, and I got this feeling they thought I was crazy. Unfortunately, their reaction shows their lack of knowledge about fasting, and about the importance of supervision during an extended fast. The money that I paid FCI was worth every penny. Dennis guided me from day one--holiday or no holiday--with his suggestions and recommendations about fasting, nutrition, psychological reactions, and the spiritual revelations. Where else could you have your own nutritional coach for 60 days? I learned more about my health than I could ever have imagined. The money that I paid for this fast will pay dividends for my health for years to come. And by the way, my friend who made that comment at the beginning of my fast, no longer has the same opinion.
"By completing my fast, I gained an incredible feeling of self-confidence! The realization that I was able to do something that most people would not have the courage to do, is very satisfying. Right now, it amazes me, the reactions I get from people when I tell them that I actually went without solid food for 50 days. Their reactions range from "I can not believe it!" to "Well, I could never do that." If only they knew. With a little, inner willpower and determination, it is not that difficult. There is also a certain freedom in fasting, and after completing my first fast, I have now decided to use fasting as a periodic cleansing tool for my body, mind and spirit. I will use this tool which FCI has taught me, for the rest of my life.
"I wish you luck with your own health and healing.--Kevin Boon"
