"The key to a happier and more successful world is the growth of compassion. There exists nothing within this vast space that cannot be healed by genuine compassion." |
DR. ROBERT THURMAN, as Chairman of Columbia University's Religious Studies Department, dedicated his translation of "The Tibetan Book Of The Dead" (with a wonderful commentary for Westerners, as well as a Foreword by the Dalai Lama) "to the brave and gentle people of Tibet, who have suffered and are suffering one of the great tragedies of our time. The entire world is now turning its back, due to fear and greed, while the Chinese government pursues its systematic campaign of genocide. May the conscience of all people cry out in one voice! May the Chinese people inform themselves at long last, find out they have been lied to by several of their own governments, and realize they are in extreme contravention of the laws of humanity and of nature! May their hearts then soften, and may they take concrete action to repair the great harm they have inflicted on this innocent people. May the Tibetan people soon regain the sovereign freedom they have enjoyed since the dawn of history! And may the sunlight of Tibetan Spiritual Science once again shine brightly upon a freshened world!"
FOUR WAYS YOU CAN HELP TIBET are: 1) Express yourself in postcards or in letters to Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama; to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as well as to your elected officials--U.S. Senator and Congressperson, State Governor and Legislator; 2) Join the International Campaign For Tibet (ICT) now--the principle voice for Tibet in Washington--which works worldwide to advocate for Tibetan human rights, self-determination, and cultural survival. Membership donations are $35, $60 or $120, and you'll receive Tibet Press Watch, a newsletter covering important events and activities worldwide. Send your check today to: ICT, 1825 Jefferson Place NW, Washington, D.C. 20036. 3) Join the Tibet Support Group in your community; call ICT (202-785-1515) for the one nearest you. 4) Visit the Save Tibet website, where you'll find the very latest news, email action alerts, etc. Be proactive NOW! Join the ICT's Action Alert Network immediately.
Your Membership Donation to the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) will be used to: (1) save and improve the lives of Tibetans living inside Tibet, as well as in exile communities; (2) support the Dalai Lama's efforts to establish peace and self-determination for Tibet, and (3) build long-term, worldwide support for the people, culture and heritage of Tibet, and a negotiated solution with China. The 'Special Meeting' called by the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, closed 11.22.08 with a strong endorsement of the 'Middle Way' approach, which seeks a genuine autonomy within the framework of the People's Republic of China (PRC), but also clearly stated that exile Tibetans might take a position seeking independence, if results of engagement were not evident "in the near future."
Way back on 6.3.92, President Clinton observed that: "The people of Tibet continue to suffer especially harsh persecution under their Bejing oppressors." Little has changed since then, just as the talks that ended 1.31.10 were the ninth round between the Chinese government and envoys from the Dalai Lama since 2002. As usual, the last round ended with no results. In a nutshell, more than 1.3 million Tibetans have died as a result of the Chinese occupation--of torture, from starvation, and by execution. More than 6000 monasteries and all their contents--irreplaceable jewels of a Tibetan spiritual culture which had produced the greatest GDP of Enlightened Beings of any nation in human history--have been destroyed.
Tibetans are routinely imprisoned and tortured for non-violently expressing their views, especially in support of the Dalai Lama. In fact, being caught with his picture can send one to prison and torture. Nuns are brutally raped in Chinese prisons, just as lay Tibetan women visiting clinics for routine health problems sometimes are sedated, awakening to discover they've been sterilized. And, in recent years, China's leadership launched a 'final solution'--a systematic, State-sponsored encouragement and movement of millions of ethnic Chinese into Tibet--augmented since 7.1.06 by the China-Tibet Train--to overwhelm and expunge the uniquely spiritual Tibetan culture by a thinly-disguised, atheistic, post-modern, Made-in-Communist-China brand of demographic annihilation.
SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER, remembering that Ghandi's brown-skinned, nonviolent movement DID FREE INDIA from 89 years of occupation by the white-skinned British Raj, even though he suffered seven years in prison. Likewise, never forget that black Africans, aided late by an awakened world's proactive compassion, finally DID FREE SOUTH AFRICA from 42 years of apartheid imposed by white Dutch Afrikaners, even though Nelson Mandela suffered 27 years in prison. Express yourself regarding Communist China's longest running attempt at cultural genocide in our lifetime--in neighboring Tibet--to Presidents Hu Jintao and Barack Obama. Tell the Dalai Lama, whom Tibetans revere as "Kundun," of your effort in Tibet's behalf. It's not too late. Just as our collective effort resulted in President Bush, on 10.17.07, becoming the first sitting U.S. President to meet the Dalai Lama in public, attending the Washington ceremony awarding His Holiness the Congressional Gold Medal--the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Congress--you CAN help make a difference, sending a letter like this:
Write: "Dear President Jintao: As an American deeply concerned about Tibet, and also interested in peace and stability in Asia, I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to enter into meaningful negotiations with His Holiness the Dalai Lama over Tibet's future, aimed at securing genuine autonomy within the framework of the People's Republic of China (PRC), and and cultural survival for the people of Tibet. I believe that there can be peace and prosperity for the Tibetan and Chinese people, and believe these negotiations would be the best way to reach a mutually-beneficial outcome. I also urge that you take every possible action, today, to ensure religious freedom and cultural survival for all the Tibetan people, and that you release all Tibetan prisoners of conscience. Yours sincerely, (name/address)."
To: President Hu Jintao, Office of the President, 9 Xihuang-Chenggen Beijie, Beijing, People's Republic of China; english@mail.gov.cn; info@cppcc.gov.cn; info@china.org.cn; http://english.gov.cn
Write: "Dear President Obama: I care deeply about the future of Tibet, and I know you do, as well. Your 9.3.08 meeting with the Dalai Lama stirred great hope among Americans and Tibetans, that America will take a strong stand on promoting negotiations between the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government, aimed at securing genuine autonomy within the framework of the People's Republic of China (PRC), and cultural survival for the people of Tibet. I am writing to you in the strongest possible terms to help make that happen. Your sincerely, (name/address)."
To: President Barack Obama, c/o The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C. 20500; president@whitehouse.gov; www.whitehouse.gov
On 4.28.93, Nazi survivor and Nobel Peace laureate Elie Wiesel posed this global question: "Why are we silent when Tibet needs our voices? This is especially poignant to some of us who believe in non-violence, of which Tibet is an inspiring symbol. If to be free is the most important goal of all, then to help someone else to be or become free, must be the most sublime and rewarding of human endeavors."
Please do so, as working to finally stop a 61-year-old genocide attempt--in y/our own time--is one of the most nobly meaningful things you can do in helping end unnecessary suffering in your lifetime. Thank you so much for your magnanimous concern for our remaining 6,000,000 Tibetan sisters and brothers, and for your infinite kindness in helping us finally gain true Tibetan autonomy. Be sure you rent two extraordinary, consciousness-raising videos: "Seven Years In Tibet," Jean-Jacques Annaud's classic story of adventure and spiritual discovery starring Brad Pitt, and "Kundun," based on the life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who on 5.25.97 publicly stated for the first time, before 2000 Tibetans in Carmel, New York, that he will "definitely" take rebirth if his country remains under Chinese rule: "I can say with absolute certainty that the 15th Dalai Lama will be reborn in the free world, and that he will be even better and more powerful than the present incarnation."
AS TO WHETHER OR NOT our collective, worldwide effort will succeed in stopping this longest-running, most deeply-suffering genocide attempt in our time, Columbia University's Professor Thurman was asked, during an interview for his 1998 book, "Inner Revolution" what he saw ahead for Tibet. His response: "Continued suffering in the immediate future, deepening oppression. And after that, I see a dawning of pragmatism in a new Chinese government, emerging from the realistic assessment of the Chinese people's real needs. Early in 2000, I see a dawn of freedom in Tibet, and a restoration of her enlightenment traditions. Many will benefit; most of all, China." Obviously, Dr. Thurman's wishful thinking has not yet materialized more than a decade later, so we must continue our effort in Tibet's behalf.
Doctor Einstein recommended we all spend "at least 10% of our waking hours" helping to right some of the wrongs we see around us. FCI invites all its clients, prospects, and kindred souls, globally--among the tens of thousands reading this Fasting.com website each month (eg., in Dec., 2009, 84% were new viewers, from 135 countries/territories using 52 languages) to do likewise, according to your interest, ability and energy, understanding that even a few seconds of effort can be helpful. As just one example, Race For The Rain Forest lets you simply click a button to save 7.4 square feet of irreplaceable rain forest (one click a day), marine wetlands or American prarie. The site's sponsors pay for your donation, so it's free for you!
Another example of a powerful, online 'loudspeaker' created in America allows the collective, comapssionate energy of citizens voices to be heard in the U.S. Congress, combining the forces of environmental, social justice, peace, and equal-justice advocates to build a just and sustainable world. The TrueMajority campaign was started by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Its principals are endorsed by: Global Exchange, Greenpeace, The Interfaith Alliance, National Council of La Raza, the National Head Start Association, "The Nation" magazine, Peace Action, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Rainforest Action Network, Rock the Vote, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Sojourners, and Women's Actions for New Directons (WAND), and a long and growing list of Americans. TrueMajority sifts through all the stuff going on in the U.S. Congress. When your voice counts to create a just and sustainable world, you get an email alert. Then, just by clicking one button, a fax is sent to your Congressperson in your name. It takes about 2 minutes a month, and it's free. To register, simply fill out their online form at TrueMajority.org.
Follow your best, intuitive wisdom, knowing that collectively, we can make a difference. Here are a few additional examples: to fight human rights violations against women, including present-day horrors such as the genital mutilation of 130 million female children, it's Equality Now. To support women survivors of violence, worldwide, perhaps including sponsoring one, pull up Women for Women International. Finally, to help in providing donated medical care to children in need, globally, there's Healing the Children.
SPEAKING OF CHILDREN, Catherine Bertini, head of the U.N. World Food Program, estimates that hunger currently affects 830 million of our 6.9 billion sisters and brothers, worldwide. The Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) estimates that 35,000 children die every single day from hunger and related illnesses, adding that these 13 million annual deaths can end if society initiates existing solutions to end hunger.

Key to providing adequate nutrition and health-care in any community is electrical energy--for refrigeration of food and medicine, and for pumping and filtering water and the resultant waste water and sewage. Electrical energy also enables irrigation of crops and the processing, packaging and transport of bulk food. When a society reaches a threshold of 2,000 kilowatt hours per person per year, infant mortality falls below 50 per year (the U.N.'s determination point between 'hungry' and 'non-hungry' nations). Also at this threshold, safe drinking water becomes available to 80% of the affected population.
Dr. Jacques Diouf, director general of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, estimates that $24 billion will buy us out of global hunger. That's 24 Stealth Bombers. Having seen this wretched hunger up close and personally during my 14-month sabbatical through Asia, Africa and elsewhere in 2003, I humbly beseech you to do whatever you can to help just one human being suffering the ravages of hunger, by Googling either 'world hunger' or 'starvation,' and following your heart, perhaps beginning with UNICEF--the United Nations Children's Fund, or Feed The Children.
Next, join The ONE Campaign, co-founded by U2's lead singer Bono, which already has two million members raising their voices as ONE to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and pressuring political leaders to support smart and effective policies and programs that are saving lives, helping to put kids in school, and improving futures throughout our global community's poorest countries.
Or, if you simply want to read for a good cause, an anthology you might enjoy is entitled "Telling Tales". We've all watched, for decades, musicians and other professionals getting themselves globally organized for various noble causes, but writers have rarely gotten around to doing so. . .until now. In this paperback, 21 of Earth's best female and male writers, including 5 Literature Nobelists, contributed, without fees or royalties, works they consider among their life's finest, just as the simultaneous publishers of this book in 12 nations likewise did so for free. The stories capture the range of emotions and situations of our human universe: tragedy, comedy, fantasy, satire, dramas of sexual love and of war in different continents and cultures.
The inspirational genius arose in editor Nadine Gordimer (also a contributor and the 1991 Literature Nobelist), and all the editions' royalties and profits, worldwide, go to HIV/AIDS prevention education and medical treatment for our estimated 40 millions sisters and brothers living with this pandemic infection and the suffering it brings to our contemporary world. In other words, when you gift yourself or a friend or loved one with some of the best work of these 21 renowned storytellers, every cent you pay for the book goes to combat this overarching plague of our new millennium. [Available at Macmillan online: $15.00.]
Finally, what follows is a book review I wrote in mid-December, 2010, for the online booksellers Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Borders, in behalf of our severely-threatened planet and all its living things, entitled: "Harmony"--A Clarion Call For A Sustainability Revolution!:
Regardless of your view of British Royalty or the Prince of Wales up to now, I challenge any open-minded, intelligent, compassionate human being who truly cares about the future of our Earth and its inhabitants, to read this new book by Prince Charles--"Harmony: A New Way of Looking At Our World"--and not conclude that this man's obvious magnum opus should not only be placed in the hands of all world leaders we're entrusting with our future and that of our children, but also be a text taught from in schools at all levels in all countries and languages (there's also a children's edition, with all published in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Brazil, thus far), especially in graduate and doctoral Environmental Studies programs.
When we say one is "a prince of peace" or "a prince among men," it's a great complement. I hope all who love our planet and its living things will now join this Cambridge-educated Prince of Wales--who's spent 30 years studying the essential principles of harmony and how they work in Nature, and how, if we ignore them, our Earth's precious life-support systems start to wobble and may eventually collapse--in his heartfelt plea to make this age fit for a sustainable future.
In essence, "Harmony" is a clarion call for a global Sustainability Revolution. Whether you prefer the hundredth-monkey or critical-mass metaphor, it's now clear to all who've done their homework (and if there ever was a Cliff's Notes version of the encroaching catastrophe threatening us and our global village, "Harmony" is it), that we humans must finally achieve the quantum leap in consciousness now clearly necessary to save our planet from ourselves.
Fortunately, "Harmony" offers not only an overview of our present situation, but also a list of the solutions, all of which depend, for their success, on looking at the world in a different way. Thus, this brilliant book challenges "the current world view in all the important areas of human activity--in agriculture and architecture, education, healthcare, in science, business, and economics," warning that "none of us can survive for very long if the underlying well-being of the planet is destroyed."
"Harmony's" hope: "Let this book be a means of explaining what has caused us to think that we can abandon Nature's rhythmic patterns. We have done so, not just in the mechanized processes we use to grow our food and treat our farm animals, or the way in which we design and build our homes, towns and cities, or the way in which we deny the crucial relationship between mind, body and spirit in healthcare. We have also done so in the way we fail, in our systems of economics, to measure and put a proper value on Nature's vital services, and even in the manner we teach OUT a proper whole-istic understanding of the fact that we are a PART of Nature, not apart from Her, when it comes to our children's education."
If, my sisters, you don't yet know why, "in the past decade, a staggering 100,000 Punjabi [Indian] farmers have committed suicide because of the economic pressures that the industrial approach has imposed upon them," "Harmony" will teach you why. If, my brothers, you're not yet aware that 500 miles off the coast of California, in an area occupying 540,000 square miles of the Pacific--nearly six times the size of the United Kingdom--there's a 'plastic vortex,' as it's become known, comprising up to 100 million tons of man-made waste--plastic packages, bottles, cans, tires and broken-down chemical sludge, "Harmony" will bring you up to speed.
Since, my friends, more than one-sixth of our nearly seven billion fellow humans are today forced to live in extreme poverty, it's important to understand how we arrived at this state here at the top of our species' evolutionary ladder. . .where, "using industrial techniques in factory farms, livestock production requires a third of the world's usable land and global grain harvest, and is responsible for around 18% of greenhouse gas emissions."
"Harmony" offers "inspiration for those who feel, deep down, that there is a more balanced way of looking at the world, and more harmonious ways of living. It not only outlines the kinds of approach that depend on us seeing Nature as a whole, but also examines the great and practical value in seeing the nature of humanity as a whole."
What this Prince of Wales hopes will become obvious to those reading "Harmony," is "just how many answers we already have at our disposal, if our goal is to re-establish our rightful relationship with Nature and pull back from the brink of catastrophe. It is a goal I truly believe is achievable, if we remind ourselves of the essential grammar of harmony--a grammar of which humanity should always be the measure."
As our friends at Nike have programmed us for over a decade, please "Just DO it!" Read "Harmony," so you not only understand what it means to the harmony of our Earth when Americans bury 222 million tons of household waste each year, while the Chinese are already up to 148 million. Please read "Harmony" to understand why its author warns: "We are testing the world to destruction, and the tragedy--no, the stupidity--is that we will only discover the real truth when we have finally succeeded in completely denuding the world of its complex, life-giving forces, and eradicating traditional human wisdom."
The Prince of Wales concludes: "We need a Sustainability Revolution. . . .We have to discover that in order for humanity to endure alongside the natural world (and the vast, as yet unnumbered creatures with which we share this miraculous planet) on which it so intimately depends for its survival, it is essential to give something BACK to Nature, in return for what we so persistently and all the more arrogantly take from Her. Our approach cannot all be based on 'rights.' There have to be 'responsibilities,' too. . . .It is my ambition that this book, the film that will follow it, and other initiatives that will accompany both, will help to facilitate that vital, cross-cultural and international discussion and exchange."
This brilliant book--"Harmony"--is a blessing for us all. Please read it and share it with loved ones, friends and colleagues, perhaps as truly meaningful, helpful and compassionate gifts during this holiday season and into the challenging new year. Please help get it into school programs at all levels as a teaching text, especially as part of an Environmental Studies curriculum. Fortunately, we each do not have to invest the global, 30-year study necessary to create this masterpiece of compassionate wisdom called "Harmony."
However, it will not move out of
Amazon warehouses and off booksellers' shelves, worldwide, without the 'buzz' we CAN help create as we all work collectively to promote it and its crucial message. As His Holiness the Dalai Lama--who planted a tree in the Prince of Wales' garden as just one, simple demonstration of what each of us can do beyond upgrading our understanding of this precious Earth's dilemma by reading "Harmony"--has often said in his own global travels: "Peace and survival of life on earth, as we know it, are threatened by human activities that lack a commitment to humanitarian values. Destruction of nature and natural resources results from ignorance, greed, and lack of respect for the Earth's living things. This lack of respect extends even to the Earth's human descendants--the future generations who will inherit a vastly degraded planet if world peace doesn't become a reality, and if destruction of the natural environment continues at the present rate.
"Our ancestors viewed the Earth as rich and bountiful, which it is. Many people in the past also saw Nature as inexhaustibly sustainable, which we now know is the case only if we care for it. It is not difficult to forgive destruction in the past that resulted from ignorance. Today, however, we have access to more information. Therefore, it is essential that we re-examine, ethically, what we have inherited, what we are responsible for, and what we will pass on to coming generations.
"Many of the Earth's habitats, animals, plants, insects and even microorganisms that we know as rare, may not be known at all by future generations. We have the capability and the responsibility. We must act before it is too late." [Excerpt from "My Tibet"]
Thank you so much, sisters and brothers, for reading "Harmony," as well as for helping spread its message which is now absolutely critical to helping us "act before it is too late," wherever and in whatever ways you're able. . .even if only writing a review of "Harmony" for your own town or city's publications, just as I have here. [In fact, please feel free to send them this one, if you wish, with my permission and blessing.]
As American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead so often advised us: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." [$29.99 list; $19.79 at Amazon.com]
