[FCI NOTE: Personally, as FCI's founder/director, I'm an old-school martial artist who trained in Japan back in the days when none of my fellow U.S. paratroopers spoke more than phrasebook Japanese, or cared what Japanese name our teachers' form of karate carried. . .back in the days when both my teachers were fifth-degree black belts on the island of Okinawa--where karate was invented--and trained me in their dojo three hours a night, 5 nights a week for 2 years while I served with the famed 82nd Airborne Division, waiting for the Vietnam War to call us. . .back in the days when one couldn't even be considered for a 5th until he'd reached age 70 (I never saw or heard of any female teachers there). . .back in the days when I quit training instead of going to Tokyo and having my hands registered, as my teachers requested, because I'd already learned, by then, that what I really wanted from martial arts lay beyond the physical/fighting aspect, and this, unfortunately, my Japanese teachers couldn't teach me, because we couldn't speak each others' language sufficiently. In my own case, I'd have to wait 12 long years before I was synchronously led to Tibetan Wise Ones willing to teach me this next level's wisdom, which I've been a student of ever since. In other words, any martial artist worthy of the name eventually realizes that controlling others' aggressiveness with such skills, if necessary, is simply basic training for the real work of controlling one's inner aggressor--the self-sabotaging, rogue-elephant, illusory ego which is the creator of all human suffering.
Over the 35 years FCI has been blessed as the global leader in our field--with clients on all continents and in all time zones, representing 210 nations--many martial artists have had the courage to step up to the plate and do this marvelous, self-improvement discipline. The following is just one, representative example of what fellow martial artists 'sound' like at FCI, and if you listen closely, you can hear the same searching for that ultimate lesson which all the martial arts have to teach, and which so long drove my own wisdom search.
This Ipswich, Queensland, client began his 60-day Program at about 286 lbs., wanting to lose at least 50, regain energy, and resolve nasal polyps "so I can breathe normally again, without having to constantly use an inhaler." Afterward, he wrote the following]:
"This is my humble contribution to those who will listen. I'm 34 years old and the owner/director of one the largest and most successful timber-flooring companies in Australia, which I built from nothing. At a younger age, I was a champion in several different martial arts, but this is not what should interest you.
"Business became more important to me than just about everything else. I became a workaholic, and totally neglected my once-awesome temple. I knew nothing of nutrition. My scale only goes up to 130 kg., or should I say when I stepped on the scale, it read zero. . .all the way around and back to zero. Since there are 2.2 lbs. per kg., I was at least 286 lbs., possibly a bit more.
"I was kidding myself that I was still pretty fit, and just had a bit of a middle-age spread around my mid-section. It became normal to have aches and pain all the time, and to be out of breath, puffing just walking up one flight of steps, or just bending over to tie my shoe laces. Doctors told me the pain in my shoulder was just in my mind. At night when I lay down, I couldn't breath because my nose would instantly block up, and I snored like a chainsaw.
"Whilst I showered at least twice a day, my wife would say quite often that I would stink. Now, bear in mind that I am quite wealthy, and ate at all the finest restaurants and only bought the finest cuts of freshest meat--no discount cuts for us; only the finest and most expensive would do. Nothing was too good or too expensive for us. After all, we'd been taught that discount meat was old meat, and no good for you.
"Of course, we'd always listened to the ads which constantly said we should eat at least three servings of dairy every day--to remain healthy and get that all-important calcium, in order to avoid osteoporosis. It's no wonder I couldn't breath.
"I'd tried straight water-fasts for 2-to-3 days, and noticed that my sinuses cleared and my pain went away for a couple of days. In fact, I was ready to do another water-fast when I went on the Netfor some inspiration. I typed in 'fasting' and could not get past this sight--fasting.com.It was exactly what I'd been looking for. Nothing being too good for me, I immediately signed up.
"I had no idea the profound effect this would have on me. Some so-called professional friends said that if I didn't eat for a month or more, I would die. Guess what? They couldn't have been more right. That fat, lazy, self-centered, tired old burned-out wreck died. I may have been 34, but I felt more like 44, whereas the person now typing this letter is a fit, vibrant, healthy, happy person who feels more like 24 than 34.
"It's not important to me that I lost 35 kg. (77 lbs.), although it seemed to be very important to those around me. Many people inquired what had I done. Others noted I looked different; one even asked had I had a shave or something. I simply replied: 'No, I just lost about 5 stone.'
"Such weight loss may excite some, but to me, this was merely a by-product of something far more personal or even spiritual, if I may. When FCI's director, Dennis Paulson, talks about the fog lifting and one becoming laser focused, this could well be the understatement of the year. But again, these are just some of the many, vast benefits of this journey, the least of which is that you regain control of this precious vehicle that carries around your soul. I've become infinitely more calm, and more at peace with myself and others than I've ever been in my life.
"In fact, I'm counting down the days, looking forward to when I can repeat this journey, only this time, I will casually travel as far as my temple will take me. I will not set any limits or goals; rather, I will just be an observer as my body skillfully takes me on a journey to enlightenment. I truly hope that doesn't sound corny, but my beliefs have always been very private, andÊI've thought quite differently from most people.
"However, it's only now that I've finally realize others are not different, at all. I remember a story one of my martial arts masters told me over 20 years ago, asking: 'If four people climb a mountain, and each one climbs a different face--one north, one south, one east, and the fourth west--when they all arrive on top of the mountain, which one travelled the correct path?'
"I'm not going to tell you the answer, unless you complete FCI's most popular, total detoxification program. Of course, if you complete their Full Monte, you won't need me to tell you the answer, since you'll have learned/earned it yourself.
"This is the best gift anyone could give another human being. Words cannot describe how great someone can become by returning to their Source. All martial artists out there will understand when I say this is the Path. This is the Way. This is my Tao. We are all sisters and brothers. This is small gift back to you, my brother Dennis, and if it made you smile, just wait until I return with the prize.
"I hope this has been of some benefit for others, just as I've received great benefit from those who passed before me on this magnificent journey. If this helps one person, then it's worthwhile. I shall pass this way again, and return with a gift for all. Ciao, mate. Mark Jolley, Queensland, Australia.
[FCI NOTE: Mark's fasting success has already inspired friends to do their own FCI Programs. The first was a member of his Business Roundtable group, signing on with his wife to do 83- and 84-day Total Detox. Programs, respectively, at their ages of 56 and 57.]
