[NOTE: Inspired by a friend and fellow Ph.D.'s
improved health, happiness and healing power, gained from doing
FCI'S 80-day Program, Beth Miller, Ph.D., a psychologist practicing in
the northern California Bay Area, approached FCI with these words:
"I've gained 20-to-25 lbs. since menopause, and I now want a
jump-start on cleaning out." As might be expected from one open to
investigating all possible mental states the fasting mind can
encounter, she came face-to-face with her own resistance, as well
as the self-sabotaging aspect of ego and it's periodic desire to
throw in the towel. After acknowledging and wrestling with these
'states,' she chose to push beyond them, discovering the
tremendous euphoria of success her friend had demonstrated
before her. In doing so, not only did she achieve all of her pre-fast
goals, but she actually fasted four days beyond her original target
before finding the brakes. Here, then, is her inspriational, post-fast
self-diagnosis.]
"I timed the end of the fast for Spring,
and the arrival of my new car. I love the experience of
transformation. I am now healthy, bright-eyed and trim, looking
forward to a well-earned sense of freedom.
"The fast was a mixture of great
fascination and gruelling difficulty. I watched with fascination as I
came up against resistance to aspects of the fast. Since I have
great respect for resistance, I walked through it and reflected on
attachments and detachment.
"I also believe in resistance, so I listened
to myself and allowed myself to think of quitting even before my
'time was up.' I experienced grace at the moment of giving up (I
synchronistically read about the tests that come when we near the
end of a journey, especially an arduous one), as is said in the desert
'just as we are to die of thirst, we see the palm trees of the oasis.'
"I knew, then, that I would go the
distance, and had had another chance to see who I am during
difficult times. That sustained me through the remaining days. By the
end of the fast, as I went to meals with friends and families (where I
did not eat, but joined in the conversation), I began to make mental
notes of the restaurants I would return to and the food I would eat,
when I was finished with the fast.
"I am so glad I did the fast. I am so
glad I succeeded, and I love feeling this light and healthy. Thank
you, Dennis, for being available. Fondly, Beth."
