[NOTE: Here in the U.S.A., we grow up in high schools and colleges where team sports are an integral part of our way of life, particularly football. Among those who have the size and talent to play it well, all you have to do any Fall weekend across America is flip through the TV channels of raucous stadiums full of college students from coast to coast, to see what heroes we make of the game's bigger stars. What happens, however, to these modern-day, giant gladiators AFTER their playing days are over? Here's just one example from the ranks of college and professional athletes who've done FCI Programs over the 35 years we've been blessed as the global leader in our field--with clients from all walks of life and societal strata, on all continents and in all time zones--including those who've won Olympic Gold for America.
Peter Quinn, 43, of Indianapolis, Indiana, was an All-Big-Ten center and All-Americanhonorable-mention at Purdue University, where his playing weight was 260 lbs. Two decades later, he'd lost none of his love for the game when he stepped up to the line to take on our most popular, TOTAL Detoxification Program--a 70-day Program (at his age), with 60 days of actual juice-fasting. Just as football game announcers give listeners a words-eye view based on their experiential knowledge of the game, we'll let Pete provide you with a little play-by-play throughout his own mid-life playoff game, as a result of which he's rewarded himself with FAR greater health, happiness and healing power for his life's Back Nine.
Just before starting, he emailed FCI the following: "In addition to running a real estate company, I also broadcast Purdue football games. I will shortly return from El Paso and the Sun Bowl, and will begin the program. Thanks for the quick response, and I look forward to going the distance with you. On the scale this morning, I weighed 269 lbs."
Nearly three weeks into his program, he wrote: "Everything is fine. I traveled to Saint Louis on business for two days, but just spent some time preparing and had no problems. I feel very good, and have already lost 31 lbs. in just 18 days. I feel strong, and my work-outs go well. It seems a little tougher on the weekends than during the week. A lot of this is attributable to old tapes in the head. I was on a pretty negative pattern of eating fairly healthy during the week, but eating junk and drinking cocktails on the weekend.
"I have some good friends who are currently on the Atkins Diet and eating primarily meat and eggs for all of their meals. I know how dangerous this can be, and I'm amazed how many of my doctor friends have done it. I plan on using my experience as an example for my friends and family, on how to do it right. Any information you may provide me to help convince my otherwise very-intelligent friends that they are committing slow suicide, would be greatly appreciated. Also, I read in one of the 'windows' that FCI has compiled a list of 74 Biblicalreferences to fasting. Please share those with me when you have a moment. As always, thanks for everything."
At halftime, Peter emailed the following: "I'm halfway home and cruising along. Today is day 35--halfway to the end of my total 70 days. My wife and I hosted a dinner party for 15 on Saturday night, and went to a Super Bowl party Sunday. There were several things served that I look forward to eating when I'm off my fast, but there were many things I know I'll never eat or drink again. For example, I can't believe I polluted my body and was absolutely addicted to Copenhagen snuff. I started chewing in college, when it was considered cool by the athletes; I know I will never touch it again. I also know I'll never touch another soft drink again. In the past, I'd have days when I'd drink 5 or 6 Diet Cokes a day. I can't imagine again taking even a sip now. I'm very enthused about how much easier this fast has been, so far, than I'd imagined."
Forty-one days in, he'd add: "All is well here: I'm on total cruise-control. The difference in my physical looks is nothing short of extraordinary! At church this morning, 50 different people made very generous, nice comments. I feel euphoric 90% of the time, and it gets a little easier each week." Likewise, 46 days in: "Today, I am totally cruising. I weighed this morning for the heck of it, and was pleased to see I'm now down to 213 lbs. . . .a 58-lb. loss in 46 days is not a bad thing. I feel wonderful! I tire a little easier when we play basketball on Thursday mornings, but I take my extra fruit juice and I'm cool. As you know, several friends have already signed on for programs, and you should be hearing from (confidential) in Indianapolis. He is a dear friend who has many Joneses to contend with, and is looking for something to change his life."
The next day, he'd add: "Most times, it seems incredibly easy to maintain the daily routine. Mornings and afternoons require zero effort, but it still gets slightly tough in the evenings--again, just old tapes, as you say, rolling around their familiar neuron pathways, seeing if I'm still interested in that junk. I feel great 90% of the time. The other 10% isn't bad. . .just the 'old tapes'."
Four days later: "I feel wonderful! I look forward to the final 15 days of the fast, and the five transitioning-out days; I look forward to my first meal. I know fasting is now a large part of my life. I appreciate everything you and FCI have done for me, Dennis; I will miss our correspondence, as much as anything else. (Confidential), a surgeon friend from Indy, indicated he would soon be starting his 75-day total detox. program. I know he'll do well. He sounded just like the pre-fast me when we talked on the phone yesterday. I also talked to (confidential) this morning, and he said he's doing great, 18 days in. He's lost a tremendous amount of weight, and feels super!"
Fifty-four days in: "I've lost a total of 62 lbs. and still feel wonderful! I'm just starting to hear the P.O.W. comments. I've always wondered what it felt like to be the butt of 'skinny' comments'; it feels good! My wife and I are hosting a dinner party for three of my former college teammates tonight. I look forward to showing them the new me. Have a great weekend." Twenty days from the endzone, he'd add: "Fasting day 50 has arrived, and I'm amazed at how quickly it got here. I feel terrific and look incredible! Many people at church this morning commented on my new appearance. I recommended that they look up (http://www.fasting.com)."
On fasting day 53: "I have one week left in my fast. Thus far, I've felt extraordinarily terrific 90% of the time on the fast, but the last few days have been incredible!. . .extreme energy, sharp mind, and overall good feelings. After staying at 210 lbs. for over a week, I've lost six pounds in the last few days, and now weigh 204. I haven't weighed this low since I was a junior in high school and lost weight for wrestling. (I went from 220 to 185, water-fasting for 14 days; this is my lowest weight since.)
"I want to maintain at 210, and see how I feel in a year. I'll probably break 200 by this time next week, and regain 5-7 upon re-feeding. Winter has finally hit in Indianapolis, and I'm looking over our snow-covered city from my office on the 45th floor, wondering why I'm not your California neighbor, living next to an ocean. I'll be there in the next seven-to-ten years. Thanks for everything; I'm counting down to the finish line now and flying to Atlanta tomorrow night, so I may not check in for a week or so, depending on when I return from my business travels. Thanks for all you've done, and after day 70, I will be sending you my own testimonial. I owe you more than you'll ever know. Peter Quinn, Indianapolis."
HERE, once again true to his word, Pete is speaking a week after completing his 70-day Program.]: "Good Morning, my friend. Since my last conversation with you, I've been to Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas and Pittsburgh. I'm sitting in my office at 5:30 a.m., approximately one hour after enjoying my Breakfast of TRUE Champions that you were kind enough to share. So, this is the perfect time to share my experiences with you. I've been off the fast for a little over a week. So, here are the results:
"I lost 70 pounds (starting on Jan. 1st at 271 lbs. and finishing the fasting portion Mar. 6th at 201). I've since gained back 8 lbs., re-filling the colon, and will maintain between 210 and 215.
"Last August, my doctor had tried to convince me to start taking medication to control my cholesterol. I've always had a very high cholesterol count, and he was convinced I needed prescription drugs to lower it. I told him I would lower it without drugs, but he seemed very skeptical, due to the fact that my family has a history of high cholesterol, and both my parents had been on similar medication for years (my father passed away last September). Post-fast, I had bloodwork completed, after which a nurse from my doctor's office left me an urgent voice-mail, asking me to call the office a soon as possible; my doctor needed to know what medication I was on that lowered my cholesterol from 297 to 145 in such a short period of time. I left them a voice-mail in response, and gave them FCI's website address.
"I look and feel years younger, and my success has been dramatic. Every aspect of my life has improved in some way! I feel that I am mentally sharper, and that I can accomplish anything I want.
"Now, what about the future? When I began the fast, I was motivated to improve my health and demonstrate to my associates the power of written goals. Both of these objectives were accomplished, beyond my most optimistic projections. What I didn't realize is that the fast would change my outlook on so many things. The first half of the fast, I often looked forward to eating the same foods I've always eaten. However, I now find myself eating healthier than I ever have, and truly enjoying eating organic fruits and vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains. I've eaten meat in the past week, but was amazed at how tasteless it was.
"Fasting will be a part of my life forever. I'll do at least a 30- or 40-day fast each year around Lent, plus I'll probably fast one day a week. I'm in the process of re-designing my life, as we speak. There are several friends fasting themselves to health right now with FCI, because they were impressed with my results.
"Previously, I'd believed that I could never control my weight, despite working out consistently and trying to watch what I ate, because my body wasn't getting the nutrition it needed. Thus, I overate in an attempt to supply myself with all the nutrients the body needs. Today, I start each day with your Breakfast of TRUE Champions, and now eat for fuel, not entertainment.
"I'll always be grateful that I found your website. I'll always be grateful that you have dedicated your life to helping others. I consider my fast as the first of many steps I'll take to improve my physical and mental well-being. I wish you continued happiness, and you will always be in my prayers. Peter Quinn"
[FCI NOTE: Pete's fasting success has already inspired a half-dozen friends to do FCI Programs, including two Indianapolis surgeons. . .a facial plastic surgeon, 47, who began his own 70-day Program at 5'8", 250 lbs., and an orthopedic surgeon, 48, who began his 75-day Total Detox. Program at 5'10", 225, admitting: "As a compulsive eater, including entire bags of M&Ms at a time, I feel terrible, and am on anticholesterol medication. Also, I look at all the patients in our hospital and know most all of them also feel terrible."However, by following Pete's example, he'd write the following just 23 fasting days into his program: "All is well. . .feeling good! Lifting weights and the exercise bike increase my energy and well-being. I have lost 30 lbs.! Thanks! (Confidential), M.D."]
